Five years ago I was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer in my lungs and thyroid cancer—right as the pandemic hit. My kids were only 3 and 6, and I was leaving an unsafe marriage. I was scared, isolated, and just trying to survive.

At the time, I didn’t know that the Send It Foundation existed—a nonprofit that provides free, week-long outdoor adventure programs for young adults facing cancer.

Three years later I found Send It and joined my first backpacking trip in the Sierras with 10 other young adults living with cancer. That week gave me the kind of healing I’d been craving but never found in hospitals: community with people who truly get it, nights under shooting stars, swims in alpine lakes after hospital isolation units. I remembered how to laugh, play, and love the hell out of life again after pure survival mode.

I’m forever grateful—to Jamie, who started Send It; to his sisters for carrying it forward; and to this incredible community. It’s such an honor to be a part of this work and help make these experiences available for others who need it.

Today, more than 800 young adults with cancer are on the Send It waitlist.
