Sheena Saydam's Birthday Fundraiser for the Maryland Immigrant Legal Assistance Project (MILAP) - About MILAP

Maria* arrived at immigration court with her husband and her young baby for her initial hearing – Maria had just given birth to her baby three days before, and had a medical catheter attached to her body. If you miss your court hearing, you receive an automatic order of deportation. This means that new mothers like Maria need to come to court or face deportation.

PBRC’s Maryland Immigrant Legal Assistance Project (MILAP) operates Maryland’s only walk-in legal clinics in the state’s two immigration courts, serving as the first line of defense for hundreds of immigrants each year. MILAP trains and deploys volunteer attorneys and interpreters to provide legal assistance to immigrant children and families, connecting them with resources for help and preserving their claims to remain in the United States.

Alongside attending their hearing, Maria and her husband had moved and were seeking help on how to notify the court of their address change. They were extremely sleep deprived and struggling with the form. Even the smallest mistake in completing this form could mean they would not learn of any upcoming changes to their next hearing date.

To help Maria and her family avoid future deportation, MILAP reviewed and assisted them with filing the form, allowing the family to relax for the first time since entering the courthouse. With the form complete, the family was able to leave with assurances that they would receive important updates about their case, going home to rest and soak in the moments of caring for their newborn.

MILAP’s work empowers immigrants, preserves family unity, and ensures due process for those who would otherwise face deportation alone. When you support PBRC, you are helping us ensure that everyone – no matter their income, race, or status – has an advocate in their corner.
