On Tuesday, March 10, 2019, the Lightning Strikes will take to the alley as part of Reach Ahead's 9th Annual Strikes, Spares, and Splits event. This night of bowling is hosted by the Read Ahead Junior Board, and while our team fully intends to bowl for glory, our primary goal is to help fundraise for this very worthy reading-based mentoring program.
As team captain, I (Tara) have been able to see the benefits of mentoring up close and personal, in my bi-weekly mentoring sessions with Preston (pictured above). While he does look forward to reading -- as long as it's Captain Underpants -- the time we spending drawing, playing Chutes and Ladders, or just talking about his latest Pokemon acquisitions is just as important (to both of us!).
Read Ahead intervenes early and connects children in NYC public elementary schools with caring, trusted, consistent mentors. We’re participating in Strikes, Spares, and Splits because we support their mission to help children unlock their full potential and want to do our part to make sure all students have access to this program.
All proceeds from this event enable Read Ahead to bring this life-changing program to the children who need it most. This year the Junior Board aims to raise $100,000!
As a team, we are committed to ensuring that children at public elementary schools like PS. 125, P.S. 36, and P.S.130, where the Read Ahead does not receive corporate funding, can continue to receive the one-to-one mentoring from a caring, trusted adult.
