This year I turned 40, and I wanted to do something big for myself. I’ve run three marathons and a dozen half marathons, but most of them were before I became a mom. Last year, I went out with my kids to watch the Chicago Marathon, and I was overwhelmed (as I usually am) by the sheer number of people running it. I found myself talking to my kids about when I ran one of these before they were born. Between that memory and the power of the Chicago Marathon crowd, I decided I wanted to do it again—not just for me, but for my kids—to show them what hard work can do. Fast forward to registering for the race: I decided to pick a cause that matters to me, and I landed on Special Olympics which is run by Special Children’s Charity.

Many of you know that I have spent much of my life and career working with children and families with special needs. I dedicated 12 years to La Rabida Children’s Hospital, serving young children with complex medical needs and their families in both the outpatient clinic and inpatient unit. Many of these families will navigate these challenges for the rest of their lives. Special Children’s Charity supports inclusion and empowerment for children and adults with disabilities throughout Chicago. My hope is to raise money for this charity as I run 26.2 miles through the city’s neighborhoods.

Here is a little more about the organization: Since 1969, Special Children’s Charities has been the driving force behind inclusion and empowerment for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout Chicago.

The spirit of accomplishment, inclusion, and joy that are part of the marathon experience are what we strive to provide for thousands of our participants in all 77 Chicago neighborhoods. With your help, we are creating a more inclusive Chicago–one mile at a time.
