We—Alex Hawkins, Grace Pereira, and Nathaniel Mersy—were expecting a very different end to our senior year of high school. In addition to graduation and prom, the three of us had plans to run a marathon together as a finale to our high school careers. When our marathon was canceled along with the other milestone festivities, the three of us knew we still needed to complete 26.2 miles together. The recent global pandemic added an incentive to help aid our community’s healthcare system in any way possible. Thus, our idea was born: running the marathon to fundraise for Children’s Hospital Minnesota.

Children’s Minnesota is one of the largest pediatric health systems in the United States with two hospitals, 12 primary and specialty care clinics, and six rehabilitation sites. It is the only health care system in Minnesota to provide care exclusively to children from before birth through young adulthood. Children’s Minnesota is an award-winning system, regularly ranked by the U.S. News & World Report as a top children’s hospital.
