Help bring Emmett Till back to his mother — the gift she was denied for 70 years.

In August 1955, 14-year-old Emmett Till left his home in Chicago to visit family in Mississippi. He never returned. He was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered — his life stolen by racial hatred.

When Emmett’s body was recovered, his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, made a decision that changed history: she held an open-casket funeral so the world could see what had been done to her child. Her courage ignited the Civil Rights Movement.

But the cruelest truth remains — Emmett never came home to his mother.

In 2026, the Till Institute will take a sacred step to reunite them. We will relocate Emmett to rest beside Mamie, where mother and son will be together forever.

From now until November 23rd — Mamie’s birthday — we invite you to join The Last Journey Home, an 800-mile symbolic walk tracing the distance between where Emmett’s life was taken and the home he left behind.

Your Steps. Your Gift.

Every step you take and every dollar you raise will help us:

  • Fund the exhumation and transportation of Emmett's remains
  • Create a memorial site where he will rest beside Mamie
  • Share their story with future generations through education and preservation.

Why 800 Miles?

Eight hundred miles is the distance between Money, Mississippi, and Chicago — the journey Emmett could not make in life. By walking these miles together, we symbolically carry him home.
