Thank You For Supporting Our Together Again Campaign

While The Arc is still focused on keeping people safe amidst the continuing impact of COVID, we have been enjoying every chance we have to bring people together again. There have been countless reunions of friends and families who missed seeing one another in person during the worst months of the pandemic. Parents embracing their adult children once again, co-workers enjoying normal banter, Dads in a support group off of zoom and together in fellowship. Together again. Please give generously to this core mission work of The Arc Baltimore.

My Story

For those of you who do not know, I've been moderating Dads Group at The Arc for over ten years of my sixteen years here. Dads Group is a support group for fathers who have a child with developmental disabilities (e.g. intellectual disability, autism, Down syndrome, epilepsy, etc.)

I started in my late twenties, a year or two before my son William was born. I wasn't a father, so I didn't feel that it was my place to speak often - other than to make them aware of certain disability-related resources. I listened intently as many of the dads vented, shared stories of success, sought advice, and offered up resources and lessons learned. It was eye-opening. I experienced a heightened level of compassion for the unique life that each of these fathers has experienced.

When Will was born, I felt much wiser about what it means to be a dad - thanks in part to these resilient men, and I felt more comfortable sharing my own personal experience as a father - even though my son doesn't have a developmental disability. It has become a brotherhood, a sacred space free of judgment, a place to drop your guard and admit that you don't always have the answer.

I've witnessed new dads (who wouldn't admit that they need help) reluctantly attend Dads Group because a family member encouraged them to and then leave feeling empowered, informed, and just a little less stressed. I've also witnessed "seasoned" dads who don't share often but attend because this is one of the few places where others "get him."

William has been coming with me for the last couple of years and has made some good friends from the group since we provide childcare. I believe this has helped William to grow as a young boy playing with kiddos with and without disabilities. He is much more understanding and patient, and he recognizes how ALL can be successful with the right level of support and compassion.

Dads Group, along with our support groups for moms and siblings, are just a few of the life-changing programs offered to people with disabilities and their families at The Arc Baltimore. I am proud to play a small part in the organization's impact on the disability community.

Please give if you can to our campaign to fund our mission of supporting people with developmental disabilities to lead fulfilling lives with a sense of belonging, purpose, and meaningful relationships.

Love, Chris
