Hello, I am Guang Yang, a Partners at a global consulting firm focused on biotech / biopharma innovation.
The why: Like so many other passionate people in the Life Sciences industry and beyond, I am personally impacted by cancer. In 2019 during a routine physical exam, a lump was identified in my neck area. Ultrasound and biopsy confirmed this was thyroid cancer - I was able to rapidly arrange surgery and have since been on regular biannual check-ups to monitor recurrence. I was extremely fortunate to have access to world-class treatments, receive advice from many friends in the industry, and end up with a positive prognosis. However, I know many other cancer patients don't have the luxury I had and that's why we need to do better.
The what: I recently accepted the challenge to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest peak in Africa in Feb 2024 to support Damon Runyon cancer researchers. This won't be an easy trek, as we will:
- Climb for 6-8 hours per day over 7 days (including night climb to the summit)
- Battle altitude challenges at 5600+m where oxygen is half vs. sea level
- Experience night temperatures below -10 degrees Celcius (before windchill)
The challenge: I aim to raise $50,000 for lifesaving research at Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, a prestigious institution that has earned 13 Nobel Prizes. If I don't hit this objective by Feb 1, 2024, I will be kicked out of the team. Please note that I am covering all personal costs of the trip and 100% donation goes to cancer research at Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3).
