I grew up near the Drakensberg mountains in South Africa, a beautiful landscape that sparked my love for majestic vistas and appetite to tackle things out of my comfort zone. Little did I know at the time that I would end up in this center of life sciences innovation, as part of teams undaunted by the challenge to discover new life-changing therapies.
It feels like now is the right time, more so than ever, to return to the continent where I grew up and take on this climb with Luke and the team. This adventure will support the critically important work of the brilliant, brave and bold researchers at the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation.
As I take on this trek, I’m reminded of those loved ones we’ve lost to cancer. I’m also inspired by my family. My youngest daughter, Catherine, recently scaled Kilimanjaro, always cheering on those around her. Charlotte is planning her post graduate studies in science after a transformative summer internship at Alnylam. My husband Pete, who has always supported me in my biotech adventures, including the last decade of my career at science-driven companies seeking to transform the way cancer is treated. Lastly, I am honoring the memory of my dear mom, whom I lost two years ago. Mom always had the right answer, no matter the topic of the day.
To our next generation of young and aspiring scientists and innovators – you are going to change the world - this climb is for all of you!
