Climbing to Cure Cancer!
5 Reasons Why I'm Doing the Timmerman Traverse
1. It's the right time. Cancer funding in the US has been totally disrupted by the changes in funding at the NIH. It's harder than ever for young scientists to commit to a career in research, and the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation provides crucial support to early career scientists at a pivotal time in their career. Investigators supported by Damon Runyon have gone on to make breakthrough discoveries about the causes and treatment of cancer, and have been recognized with 13 Nobel prizes, founded multiple highly successful biopharma companies, and most importantly, making major contributions to 12 approved cancer therapies. 100% of your donations go to fund cancer research - this his how we make a tangible difference.
2. It's a chance to be part of something big. Over the last 8 years, the Timmerman Traverse has raised more than $14 million to combat cancer, sickle cell disease, and poverty. The event brings together a community of committed individuals who make a real, measurable impact. It's big enough to make an impact, but small enough that my (and your) contributions make a difference.
3. It's Kiliman-freakin-jaro. When else will I have a chance to do something like this? Kilimanjaro represents not just a physical challenge, but an opportunity to explore a part of the world I’ve never seen. This isn’t just about the climb—it’s about experiencing more of the world and meeting the incredible people we share it with.
4. It's personal. Like all of you, I have lost family and friends to cancer. Right now, I have a cousin who is in hospice with stage 4 colorectal cancer. This journey is for him and his family, and for all of the other people who are fighting this battle every day. Aug 26 update - my cousin passed away this morning.
5. It's a challenge. This trip is pushing me to my limits in more ways than one. Physically, I’ll have to train to prepare my body for a climb at high altitude. Mentally, I’ll face the challenge of fundraising—something I’ve never done before. But if I can take on something this daunting, I know it will open up new possibilities for what I—and we—can accomplish.
