WHY I CHOSE TO WALK THE MARATHON THIS YEAR
As most of you already know, I love Kitten Rescue, an organization that saves all lost and abandoned cats---tiny kittens, adults, seniors, medical cases, disabled cats, and yes, even---dogs! (We have an 18 year old poodle in our kitten nursery to prove the latter point)! More on all these in later posts....
I'm WALKING THE MARATHON this year particularly to honor the spirit and memory of another Marathon Walker--Kathy Eschenko. I never met Kathy, but due to her passing early this year from cancer--I learned a lot about her and her lifetime of advocacy for animals and for Kitten Rescue. I learned that Kathy was whole heartedly dedicated to animal welfare throughout her life, one which was also filled with hardships and medical issues.
A couple months ago following Kathy's death, Sandra posted this memorial video, along with a story that caught my attention; it actually hit me like a lightning bolt. Sandra explained that one year, Kathy, (a "non-athlete") walked the full marathon for Kitten Rescue. With little fan fare or training but much determination, she finished with the last of the pack. As Kathy said in the video below about the 2012 Marathon--when she was asked to participate she said that was the "least little thing she could do" to raise money for cats and to demonstrate her commitment. And Sandra poignantly stated---If Kathy can do it, I CAN DO IT! And at that moment I knew that's what I was going to do. PLEASE HELP ME HONOR KATHY'S MEMORY AND SAVE MORE CATS FOR KITTEN RESCUE.
