Flourish Counseling & Wellness is honored to partner with New Moms as a community sponsor for their annual fundraising campaign, "Together We Thrive 2020." Our partnership reflects Flourish's passion and advocacy for perinatal mental health and wellness. Our fundraising efforts are focused on advocacy, economic mobility and raising awareness of the maternal health and mental health of young, Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) moms and their families.

New Moms Mission

At New Moms, young moms, 24 and under, take powerful first steps toward economic mobility and family well-being. Our 2-Generation approach puts families experiencing poverty in control of their goals and unleashes their potential. 

It’s not easy: institutional and systemic racism perpetrated against Black and Brown people, bias against adolescent moms, and disinvestment in communities of color sends a harmful message to young families. Living in poverty and experiencing scarcity can impact brain development and take a toll on long-term individual and community health. Although  97% of the young families that come to New Moms are experiencing poverty, all of them seek a future of shared prosperity with their children. 

Black Women's Maternal Health Crisis

Racial disparities persist in maternal morbitity, mortality and infant health:

• Black women are three to four times more likely to experience a pregnancy-related death than white women.
• Black women are more likely to experience preventable maternal death compared with white women.
• Black women’s heightened risk of pregnancy-related death spans income and education levels.

Black women deserve to have safe and healthy pregnancies and childbirth. To meaningfully improve Black maternal health outcomes, we need systemic change that starts with the health care system, improves access to care and makes the places Black women live and work healthier, more fair and more responsive to their needs. Only when we do that will Black women be able to achieve their optimal health and well-being throughout their lifespan, including if they choose to become parents. - National Partnership for Women & Families
