When Ashley and I started producing and hosting Frida's film trivia night in April 2022, we had no idea this scrappy little event would grow into such a thriving community of movie nerds. Back then, we averaged about 25 players and ~10 teams each month—one of whom was a notorious one-man team called "No Hay Banda." That's Eugene Kang, who won so consistently, we eventually ended his notorious winning streak by recruiting him onto our editorial team instead.
Since then, we've grown to over 100 players most months, all enjoying a free, high-quality event powered entirely by volunteers. Every month, our small team puts in serious hours: brainstorming and researching rounds, writing and editing questions, building the slide deck, creating social posts and trailers, then running the actual show—soundcheck, team registration, hosting, and grading. It's a lot of work, and we love every second of it, because we want Frida Cinema to stay a pillar of the cinephile community here in Orange County.
Beyond the trivia, this show has given us a vibrant community of folks we now call friends: our regulars, the Frida's volunteers and interns, and each other. Our goal for this fundraiser is $500 to help keep this event free and thriving for years to come. Any amount helps—thank you for supporting us!
