Crash Story: Barbara Galgiani’s connection to the Truck Safety Coalition stems from a heartbreaking tragedy. In 2012, her nephew, Paul Katuszonek, a dedicated police officer, cancer survivor, husband, and father to a one-year-old daughter, was killed by a truck driver violating hours-of-service regulations. Despite the truck driver’s conviction of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and serving only six months, the company responsible, Gold Star Foods, faced no criminal charges. Paul’s untimely death continues to fuel Barbara’s fight for justice and accountability, not only for drivers but also for the companies employing unsafe practices.
Relationship/Involvement with TSC: Since discovering the Truck Safety Coalition, Barbara has become a passionate advocate and supporter. She actively engages in TSC’s legislative efforts, believing that meaningful changes in laws and regulations are vital to preventing similar tragedies. This year, Barbara spearheaded efforts in matching gift campaigns, inspiring others to support TSC’s mission. Through her personal networks, she has shared the importance of truck safety, encouraging even business owners with fleets to join the cause.
Why Supporting TSC Matters: “I hope that with the efforts of the Truck Safety Coalition, no family will have to endure the kind of loss that ours did. It’s through changes in laws and regulations that we can prevent further unnecessary tragedies.” - Barbara Galgiani
