I'm fortunate enough to lead the amazing team at Animal Justice. It's not always an easy job, because Canada's animal protection laws are decades out of date, and the industries that profit from animal abuse fight every step of the way to block even the most modest improvement.

But depite adversity, we're making change. Here's just some of what our team has been able to achieve in the past year.

  • Filing the first-ever constitutional challenge in court to Ontario's so-called "ag gag" law which makes it illegal to go undercover to expose hidden animal suffering at farms and slaughterhouses
  • Defeating Bill C-205, a federal ag gag bill that would have hit people with massive penalties simply for exposing abuse on farms
  • Making headlines for filing a legal complaint with authorities about Kiska, the orca who has been kept in solitary confinement at Marineland for over a decade
  • Putting animals on the election agenda, by hosting Canada's first federal debate with MPs on animal issues
  • Creating the Animal Justice Academy, a free six-week course to that has empowered over 5,000 people to become better animal advocates and be part of the movement to create change
