I have bared witness at slaughterhouses. These complexes of cruelty churn out death by the thousands every hour. I have given comfort to young calves gasping for air packed in filthy transport trucks, seconds away from the kill floor, looking for one more moment of kindness. While I led a plant-based life before, these moments changed my life, incited me to be an animal advocate & reaffirmed my choice to be vegan.
Deciding that a dog or cat deserves to live their life in comfort, versus a cow being cramped in a slaughterhouse and killed, is illogical to me. This type of cognitive dissonance has become our mindset, and it’s this kind of illogical thinking that our society uses to fuel racism, sexism & classism. I believe no life should be held higher in regard than another.
I don't think people intentionally mean to be cruel or support cruel practices. As animal allies, it's our role to lift the curtain for them, and start conversations. Together, our actions - big or small - make an impact. And the animals & planet will be a better place for it.
