It is hard to believe that 10 years ago, we sat in the oncologist’s office and
were told that I had renal cell carcinoma and I would survive maybe 6
months. On October 4, 2026, I will participate in my eighth walk for the Virginia
Thurston Healing Garden. The mission of Healing Garden Cancer Support
Center is to optimize quality of life for all those affected by cancer. I have
had nine years of support, encouragement and profound friendships from
my participation in programs at the Healing Garden.
We moved on from that original oncologist and enrolled in a clinical trial
which was terminated because it showed no improvement. Then I moved
onto yet another clinical trial which lasted about 9 months. I have not had
any medical intervention for the last 8 years. There have been a lot of ups
and downs; treatments, hospitalizations, and surgeries. I have only a faint
memory of my most trying days. They are behind me now.
My participation in programs at the Virginia Thurston Healing Garden
sustained me on this journey. I regularly participate in the Metastatic Group
which has encouraged and nourished me. The group allows the
participants to be themselves, provide no excuses and accompany each
other in their own place. The connections I have made at the Healing
Garden are sincere and life enhancing.
Kathy Ann, my wife, and I have taken advantage of the programs and
services of the Healing Garden - support groups, music group, LGBT
group, art sessions, book club, massages, and educational programs. This
array of services has enabled me to embrace hope and walk to support this
organization year after year.
In the past we have completed the Walk with friends and family. If you
would like to join us this year come to the Virginia Thurston Healing Garden
in Harvard Massachusetts on Sunday October 4 at 1 PM.
For your support I am very grateful. Please consider contributing to my
walk this year. You can donate here: https://secure.qgiv.com/event/vthgwalk26/account/2468777/donate/
