Brecken's Story

Just like a story of birth, Brecken's story began August of 2019. A date our family will forever remember just like a day of birth, this day was like any other day we got up and we're getting ready for the day, however Brecken woke up not feeling well and was inconsolable. I remember getting our daughter feed and changed and hearing my husband yell Dani you need to come now Brecken is unresponsive. I remember quickly laying our daughter in her crib and running into the room, I immediately froze and knew it wasn't good, I told my husband call 911 and this is how our journey started. We arrived in the emergency room not knowing what just went on and them thinking he maybe had a febrile seizure which is common in children, although Brecken didn't have a fever so that's when we were transferred to Children's hospital for more testing. An hour after arriving in the ER Brecken had 2 more severe seizures, we were then admitted to the children's intensive care unit for 5 days where he under went a CT scan, MRI, and EEG of his brain all which came back normal. Brecken was diagnosed with epilepsy, started on seizure meds, and we were sent home to navigate this new journey feeling very overwhelmed and alone. Over the last year Brecken has tired numerous medications to control his seizures will little luck. He started to see a specialist that only see peds with epilepsy and he is under going more testing to try and determine the direct cause of his seizures. We've made gains since being seen by the specialist, Brecken's longest stretch seizure free has been 30 days and we are not giving up...We hope to make it past those 30 days in the future. Over the last year our family has learned that your life can change in a minute and you never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have. When I look back over the last year, I've learned that it's okay to not be okay. Brecken has showed us over this last year that he is brave, strong, and he is not going to let anything stand in his way of achieving great things. Before Brecken's diagnosis we knew little about epilepsy, but have learned so much in this last year and want to give people awareness and the tools they need if encountering someone who is having a seizure. Our team Brave Like Brecken is raising awareness and collecting donations if you choose to donate to help raise awareness and find a cure for all people struggling with epilepsy. Join our team for a neighborhood walk on October 3rd to help raise awareness and support Brecken and everyone else battling epilepsy.
