Supporting Rachel and all children impacted by epilepsy in Minneosta

This is Team Rachel Roni's 4th year of supporting the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota (EFMN) through their annual walk.  Previously we have shared Rachel's story and winding epilespy path as well as the great programming EFMN has provided to her - Shining Stars and Camp Oz.  For this year, we would like to highlight Seizure Smart Schools and how important it is to keep children with epilepsy proteected at school.

60,000 Minnesotans have epilepsy or have experienced a seizure – 1 in 10 of us.  What I sharing today is a story that takes it down to one – one person, in this case a child, impacted by this complex and varied neurologic disease state – my daughter, Rachel.  In February, prior to Covid19 taking over the world, I received a phone call at my work from the school nurse at Rachel’s school asking me to come pick her up.  Why?  Because the school administration decided to test the emergency lighting system in the school.  Many epileptics, Rachel included, are light sensitive and can and will have significant seizure activity due to flashing lights.  Rachel, at 13, is aware of this concern and as soon as she saw the flashing lights requested to go “hide out” in the nurse’s office.  The nurse, who although is compassionate and engaged with Rachel – mainly due to Rachel’s love of Band-Aids – did not have the training or knowledge of what to do with the multiple children in her office – all epileptics all reporting either not feeling well or scared of pending seizures – and the best course of action was for Rachel to go home.

Seizure Smart Schools is a program for any school or district in Minnesota providing education and training in seizure recognition and response https://www.epilepsyfoundationmn.org/support-training/seizure-smart-schools/).  From normalizing epilepsy amongst a child's peers to providing school nurses with fundamental seizure training, Seizure Smart School is a free service that can give parents, such as myself, a level of comfort that the school knows how to appropriately recognize and respond to a seizure episode.

Team Rachel Roni walks in 2020 to again support EFMN and raise awareness of the impact Seizure Smart Schools can make in Minnesota.
