March 7th, 2019 I first heard the word cancer. In the following weeks we learned about the treatment plan. This included a month in the hospital, countless blood draws, weeks of chemo regimes, and ongoing monitoring for the next 6 months of treatment (and beyond!). We were in a fog of terrible news. We then were connected with the ASK organzation. They called to speak with me during our first hospitalization and asked how we were all doing - not just Holden - and how they could help. They asked for our preferred gas station, they asked what sorts of things Holden and Piper liked, they told us they could pay our bills if we needed. We had decided that I should quit my job to be able to be with Holden during the day and available for the ongoing doctors visits. It was a blessing when ASK paid our mortgage and sent us gift cards to help cover costs of the continuous drives to the hospital and countless snacks that were needed for everyone. ASK has envited us to parties, proms, and private meetings with Santa. The work they do makes being a "cancer family" a little easier.
