Join us as we honor the memory of our dear friend, Cicily Blackmon. Cicely died in January 2017 at the age of 42, from a pulmonary embolism (PE). She was traveling with her fiancé from Washington, DC to Hawaii, spending several days in California before reaching her destination. Sadly, a blood clot in her lungs, known as a Pulmonary Embolism (PE), took her life, before reaching Hawaii. After her death, it was reported that she had been experiencing the classic symptoms of a PE and a DVT, a blood clot in her leg. The blood clot in her leg, traveled to her lungs, causing Cicily’s fatal PE.
If Cicily recognized her symptoms, and was aware that the cross country flight she was travelling on put her at an increased risk for blood clots, she may still be here today. Unfortunately, fewer than 1 in 4 people know how to recognize the signs and symptoms of a blood clot. Knowledge is power and awareness of these symptoms and risk factors can save lives when prompt medical attention is sought.
The Walkathon for Cicely is organized by Stephanie Glover and Robin Kelley on behalf of the Mt. Airy Baptist Church in Washington DC. The Church is happy to support the mission of the National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA), dedicated to advancing the prevention, early diagnosis and successful treatment of life-threatening blood clots, such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and clot-provoked stroke.
The 4 mile walk starts at Mt. Airy Baptist Church, goes to the National African American Museum of History and Culture and ends back at the church.
Join us by participating in the Walkathon for Cicily while raising awareness and funds for NBCA. Your help will make others more aware of the often unrecognizable signs and symptoms. Your donation on Cicily's behalf will assist NBCA in continuing their life-saving mission. You can make a difference.
