Personal Story

I was diagnosed in 2012 but have battled with the symptoms for many years. I recall experiencing symptoms in my childhood. It wasn't until about 1996 that I began complaining about being fatigued and having aches and pains. I went to a few different doctors complaining about this only to be told my thyroid levels were fine. I didn't have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and I was not diabetic. I was fine, they all would say. But I knew something was not right. I continued switching primary doctors because I was determined to get some resolution for what my body was feeling. I landed on the primary care doctor I have now and asked her to test me for arthritis, because now the pain and fatigue levels are extreme. I had a few incidents were my back totally gave out on me and left me paralyzed for a day or two, and up to five days once. My primary care doctor ran the test and called me into the office with the results. She shared that my ANA levels were very high with suspected Lupus being the case and she had never seen numbers that high. She referred me to a specialist. The first appt with him was four months later. When I got my test results from him, he was also shocked with how high my ANA levels were and I got my official diagnosis of Lupus. Once I educated myself, I learned that Lupus had been the cause of all my issues for all those years. I battle back and forward if I actually do have Lupus or not. I think that's the realization of putting a name to something I'm not able to control. I'm here now, striving to live, love, and have peace.
