Do you remember buying your first place? 

I remember buying mine. I remember taking those keys and, with shaking hands, unlocking the front door and stepping into my future. I could never have bought that first place without help, though. It was the early 1980s and mortages were running 18%. Yup, you read that right. I lived in Maryland at the time, and they had a first-time home-buyer program offering subsidized loans. I was able to participate...with an 11.5% interest rate. Ah, the good ol' days!

Today, many people still need help buying a house, and they often turn to Habitat for Humanity. Habitat works with buyers as they qualify for their mortgage, build up sweat equity toward the construction of their home, and take budgeting and home ownership classes. Habitat also works with them to access programs that help reduce the all-in cost of buying the home. 

Because Habitat believes that everyone deserves a safe, decent, affordable place to live, they build right-sized, right-priced homes so families can cross the threshold into their future. And by keeping their mortgage affordable, they have room in their budgets for the rest of what life brings, setting them up for stability and success.
