Carlos grew up 10 doors down from Alpha.  He joined the gang because that's what nearly all young men do in this neighborhood.  When he was 14, Carlos went to jail for gun possession.  Later, when he found out he was going to be a dad, he brought Maria in for a pregnancy test.  The very young couple so desperately wanted something different for their little one.  Maria immediately started meeting with a mentor and the couple attended the pregnancy education class, earning a pack-n-play and a safe place for their expectant baby to sleep.  After baby Isaiah was born, Maria started her GED class at Alpha.  Now that Alpha is offering men's programming, Carlos has also started his GED.  This year, I walk for Carlos, Maria, and baby Isaiah.  Their story, like mine, gives hope that generational change CAN happen.
