I Was Blind, But Now I CAN’T See!!!
I was blinded by the illusion that love equals fear, pain, suffering.
I was blinded by the illusion that love equals manipulation, coercion, tit for tat.
I was blinded by the illusion that love equals being small, being silent, being invisible.
I was blinded by the illusion that love had to be earned, had to be a sacrifice, had to be a bargain.
I was blinded by the illusion that love means being used, being bought, being sold.
I was blinded by the illusion that love means never leaving, never telling, never healing
Then I met you. True blindness. True darkness. True vision loss.
Suddenly, the dark night of the soul became real, became physical, became irreversible.
The illusions of blindness in some ways prepared me for this true dark night of my soul.
On February 6, 2022 Super Bowl Sunday, I woke up and it looked like I was seeing a cloud in front of my right eye. It was like looking through a piece of plastic with Vaseline over it.
I thought it’s just the glaucoma. I thought it will clear up. I thought I just need to put the various drops in my eye.
It did not clear up, it was not the glaucoma, it was a stroke in my eye. Who knew such a thing existed? I guess somebody did because they wrote about it.
Medical term is, BRVO. Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion. (https://www.asrs.org/patients/retinal-diseases/24/branch-retinal-vein-occlusion).
Basically, there was a lot going on in my right eye that lead to this sudden vision loss. Which has been the “icing on the roller coastercake” called my life. The only reason this has been easier than any other challenge I've faced, It's because of the extraordinary staff, services, and resources offered at the Lighthouse Of Pinellas services
I’m thrilled to be participating in White Cane Walk 2026, a fundraiser supporting Lighthouse of Pinellas! I’m passionate about this cause and need your help! Every donation—big or small—helps me reach my fundraising goal and directly impacts this important cause.
Here's how you can help:
- Donate: Contribute whatever you can. No amount is too small!
- Spread the Word: Share my fundraising page with your friends, family, and social networks. Let’s spread awareness so we can raise more!
Thank you for standing by me in this effort. Your support means the world to me!
Why We Walk
Enoch Brown's Story: Independence, Determination, and Possibility
2026 Lighthouse of Pinellas White Cane Walk Ambassador
At 19 years old, Enoch Brown has already overcome tremendous challenges. Born blind due to optic nerve hypoplasia, Enoch spent much of his childhood in foster care before finding stability with his aunt. Through it all, he refused to let blindness or his circumstances define his future.
A recent graduate of Gibbs High School, where he participated in jazz band and wrestling, Enoch is now preparing to attend St. Petersburg College to study cybersecurity. His goal is to work for a company like Microsoft, proving that blindness is never a barrier to success.
"People think there are things blind people can't do," Enoch says. "I like proving them wrong."
Over the past two years, Lighthouse of Pinellas has helped Enoch build the confidence and skills to live independently. Through Orientation & Mobility training, he learned to safely travel throughout his community, navigate stores, cross busy intersections, and advocate for himself. He also developed skills in cooking, assistive technology, Braille, budgeting, and independent living.
"Lighthouse didn't baby me," Enoch shares. "They told me, 'You can do this.' They held me to a higher standard."
Looking ahead, Enoch hopes to mentor other blind and visually impaired students, helping them learn the skills and technology needed to pursue college and meaningful careers.
When asked what Lighthouse has meant to him, his answer is simple: "It's a very good space. There are a lot of good people here to help you with everything you need."
As the 2026 White Cane Walk Ambassador, Enoch represents what is possible when individuals who are blind or visually impaired have access to the right training, support, and opportunities. Every dollar raised through the White Cane Walk helps empower people like Enoch to live independently and pursue their dreams.
"No matter what you've been through or what disability you have, you can still do it." — Enoch Brown
