A little over three years ago I was diagnosed with three mental illnesses, mental illnesses that to this day I find myself hesitant to disclose to family, friends, employers, dates, etc., because I am all too familiar with the stigma. After my diagnoses, I spent a large part of my time wishing that any other organ in my body had been ill instead, because I knew that no one would ever question multiple sclerosis, or say that breast cancer was a myth, or believe that diabetes was a result of just not trying hard enough. Just like those illnesses, mental disorders can be terminal and incurable but some people still believe that the brain is incapable of being ill. Please join me in ending the stigma against mental illness, I guarantee you that one of your loved ones is fighting this battle in silence because of it.
