My journey with Camp Lakey Gap started before there was a "Camp Lakey Gap", it was known as "Western Camp" or "Mountain Adventure Camp". I came to Black mountain as a college student to work with the autistic population for the first time, and it changed my life. I became fascinated with the thought of providing support for people with autism and their families, and my career sprouted from my involvement with camp. 

I worked as an autism specialist for the TEACCH program in Asheville for 9 years after graduating, continuing to learn and grow and find new ways to support autistic clients. Then, after a few transitions (one to Oregon and back), the opportunity arose to direct this program that I fell in love with many years ago. 

Needless to say, I jumped at the chance, and am now in possibly the greatest job I've ever had. I love camp, I love the campers, the staff, the community of support, and the feeling of doing something I believe in whole-heartedly. 

I am asking that you consider making a small donation to our program so that we can continue to enable low-income families to participate and to expand our services to become a better partner for people in our community and in the autism community.
