Riverglass Dedication

Thursday, November 12, 2026
10:30 - 11:00 AM: Dedication at Riverglass, 529 Brooklyn Ave, San Antonio, TX 78215 (near the San Antonio River lock and dam)
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM: Mixer at Back Unturned Brewery, 516 Brooklyn Ave, San Antonio, TX 78215

Join the San Antonio River Foundation as we dedicate Riverglass, a new public artwork by Ansen Seale. The 12-foot sculpture is made of three cubic forms built from antique glass bottles set in terrazzo tile. It honors the environmental leaders who fought to restore the San Antonio River: Lila Cockrell, Wayne Hollomon Price, Roberto Anguiano, and the Fay Sinkin Family.

The bottles came from the river itself. When the river was dredged and widened from 2007 to 2009, crews uncovered a large cache of bottles dating to the 1870s, some still holding beer. Breweries along the river, including Lone Star and Pearl, once used it as a dumping ground, especially during Prohibition. By the 1950s and 60s, a growing environmental movement began to champion the river as a treasure for both the economy and the environment. SARF stored the recovered bottles for 16 years until they found their purpose in Riverglass.

Dedication | 10:30 - 11:00 AM

  • Remarks from artist Ansen Seale on how the work was made
  • Words from Frates Seeligson, Executive Director of the San Antonio River Foundation, on the river’s history in this stretch
  • A first look at the sculpture’s QR-code pattern, which links to a bilingual (English/Spanish) website about the environmental leaders and the history of the river and its glass

Seating is limited, but there is plenty of standing room. Temporary parking will be available on site.

Then, a toast to the river | 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Stick around for a mixer with the artist at Back Unturned Brewery (516 Brooklyn Ave, San Antonio, TX 78215), just around the corner. Drinks and light snacks are on SARF. Fitting, given where the bottles came from.

Free and open to the public.

Art along the river, made possible by you
Riverglass is part of a larger effort by the San Antonio River Foundation to bring art to the river and the people who gather along it. Our work includes permanent public art projects along the Museum and Mission Reaches, and ARTS programming, the events that activate the river: open-call projects by local artists, live music, all-ages dance parties, and art and ecology experiences. We also publish river.wav, a cassette compilation of river-inspired sound and song.

Hear more from Ansen Seale at the Legacy Luncheon
Ansen Seale is a featured artist speaker at the Foundation’s Legacy Luncheon on Thursday, November 5, 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM at Stable Hall (307 Pearl Pkwy, with free parking until 3:00 PM). This year’s luncheon puts SARF’s public art program center stage, with live jazz, a Lotería game featuring the public artworks SARF has helped bring to the river, a river-themed wine pull, a silent auction of miniature artworks, door prizes, and a first look at the artists and stories behind our newest commissioned works. Proceeds support SARF’s ongoing public art and river programming. Reserve a table
