STORIES OF IMPACT

Zander came to Second Round through a court referral, unsure of what to expect. Through honest conversations with staff, he began to understand this wasn’t a punishment, but an opportunity to grow socially, mentally, and physically.

At first, his goals were: learn to box and build new relationships. Over the next 5 months, Zander fully invested in the program, showing both intention and willingness to grow.

Now, his goal is to be a leader. Zander often leads small group sessions, and often creates a welcoming environment for new youth who had the same uncertainty he once had.

Beyond the workouts, he’s continued to develop better relationships with peers at school, and with his family. His self-confidence and maturity have grown tremendously.

Zander’s now an important part of the Second Round program. His energy, growth, and genuine passion for uplifting others is a powerful reminder of what young people can do when they’re given the right support, influence, and opportunities.

Natalia’s parents felt she would benefit from being around more peers, in a positive and structured environment. At the beginning, she was quiet and shy. However, within the first month she started to come out of her shell.

As she grew more comfortable, Natalia’s personality started to shine. She began to support staff and peers, welcomed new youth, and consistently brought a positive attitude. With regular attendance, she built more self-confidence and her kindness helped others open up too.

Two years later, Natalia now works with Haven House as a Peer Leader with our Restitution and Community Service program, while staying committed to Second Round. Her growth continues to create a ripple effect that will support other youth in our community.

Kacen was referred to Second Round through school because of academic concerns. The goal was to get his grades back on track so he could try out for the football team. Initially, Kacen had little interest in boxing and was focused on meeting his basic requirements.

Kacen connected with a tutor through Grow Your World, and began to take full advantage of the program’s study area. It became a space where he could as questions he did not feel comfortable asking in front of peers at school. Overtime, his confidence grew and he started to take pride in his academic progress.

Although Kacen originally came to Second Round to train for football, he started to recognize his natural ability in boxing. With encouragement from peer coaches, Kacen continued to develop his technique and really leaned into becoming a better boxer.

Today, Kacen continues to grow both academically, and in the ring. His journey reflects how growth often comes from being open to new possibilities, and how a steady commitment can turn early goals into something greater with time.
