On Saturday, September 26, I’ll be paddling out at Mission Beach for the 17th Annual 100 Wave Challenge to raise money for Boys to Men Mentoring here in San Diego.

Surfing has been a big part of my life for years. I used to teach surfing at the Mission Bay Aquatic Center, and I’ve been lucky enough to surf all over the world, including Mexico, Peru, and El Salvador.

Through all of those experiences, I’ve seen how surfing can genuinely change people’s lives. It builds confidence, gets you through tough times, and brings together people from completely different backgrounds.

I’ve also gotten to see that through volunteering with Life Rolls On, helping people with disabilities get out in the water and experience surfing. There’s something pretty incredible about watching someone catch a wave who may have never thought they’d get the chance to surf.

The mentorship side of this cause is personal to me too. I’ve been fortunate to have positive male role models throughout my life who have encouraged me, challenged me, and helped shape me into the person I am today. I know how valuable it can be to have good people in your corner, especially when you’re young.

That’s why I’m excited to take on the 100 Wave Challenge. Boys to Men Mentoring gives teenage boys that kind of support by connecting them with positive male mentors and a community that shows up for them.

So on September 26, I’m going to do my best to catch 100 waves in one day. I’m sure my arms will be feeling it by the end ?, but it’s for a cause I really believe in.
