Why I Walk

Most pregnant women know about preeclampsia and are monitored regularly for any changes in their blood pressure that might be cause for alarm. But did you know you can also get postpartum preeclampsia as long as 6 weeks after delivery? I was feeling off the Friday after Maeve was born and thankfully, listened to my body. I checked my BP twice at home when I was suspicious it might be high…it was steadily climbing to dangerous levels. I spoke with my OB and they sent me right back to labor and delivery to be readmitted with my 10 day old baby. When I got here my BP was 198/103. I’m grateful I came when I did. Between the blood pressure readings and elevated liver enzymes, it was clear that I had postpartum preeclampsia. Medications and seizure precautions were started right away. My blood pressures eventually stabilized with medication and we are so thankful for the quick action of our OB. Please, mommas, keep listening to your body after your baby is here.  Know what you’re at risk for postpartum and be vigilant. I had a drug free delivery, have never had an issue with blood pressure in my life, and I’m a pretty healthy person…it can happen to anyone. This is why I walk.
