For the past ~3 years, I have been an employee at the Capital Area Humane Society- one of the largest animal shelters in the area. On average, our shelter intakes roughly 6 dogs and 8+ cats each day we are open to the public. As a no-kill shelter, we aim to rescue and find homes for as many animals as we possibly can- regardless of how long it takes. At any given time, there are hundreds of animals being rehabilitated and housed in our shelter system until they can find their new homes. Our staff work tirelessly to care for each and every pet that walks through our door, but this is often an expensive process.

On average, CAHS will spend $390+ per animal that is entered into our shelter system. In contrast, the average adoption fee is just $90.

The adoption fees for our pets are strategically kept at low rates in an effort to make the adoption process accessible and affordable. This increases the odds of our animals finding loving homes and helps adopters by alleviating some of the financial strain of taking home a new pet. However, in our effort to provide quality care for our animals- such as dental work, spaying and neutering, and various other surgeries- the costs of saving animals continue to rise.

Despite the costs of care, CAHS continues to rescue thousands of pets each year. In 2021 alone, we found homes for 4,355 animals, and in 2020 we had an average of one adoption every 26 minutes that we were open!

As a non-profit, CAHS does not receive any government funding. Instead, we rely on the support of our community to continue our mission of rescuing animals. And with additional public resources such as our low-cost spay and neuter clinic and food bank pantry, we need your support now more than ever!
