The Honolulu AIDS Walk, established in 1991, was created to meet the urgent needs of Hawaii's LGBTQIA+ community and those living with HIV. This event was founded at a time when the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS was at its peak, creating a critical platform for raising awareness and rallying support. Today, the walk remains profoundly relevant, as there is no cure for HIV and our community continues to face ongoing stigma associated with sexual health. It has grown to become the largest fundraiser in the state dedicated to supporting individuals living with HIV, with all proceeds benefiting the programming at the Hawai'i Health & Harm Reduction Center. The event serves as a crucial gathering point for policymakers, local businesses, and everyday citizens, all coming together to demonstrate their support for the LGBTQIA+ community and those affected by HIV, reinforcing a community of inclusivity and care.

Funds raised by The Walk For Life! support direct services for people living with HIV as well as prevention services to help stop the spread of HIV.  Services such as:

  • Providing pre-paid cellphones for clients to keep in touch with care providers.
  • Community-building events for those living with HIV and their families
  • Medical transportation for someone living with HIV to attend medical appointments.
  • Assisting with co-pay of medications for those living with HIV.
  • HIV tests for the general population of Oahu
  • HIV prevention educational programs
