Thank you for visiting my Fundraising Page for the APDA Optimism Walk.
My grandmother was diagnosed when she was 40 years old, very young for a PD diagnosis ! By the time I started to visit her in Costa Rica she was far too advanced, I was about 9 years old when I first met her. I remember asking myself "How can I help grandma? What is this that she has?" Of course as a 9 year old you understand very little so by the time I started high school, I started to think about careers that could help her diagnosis. The more I looked into this diagnosis and the benefits of physical therapy I had no doubt that I needed to become a physical therapist ! It is amazing how much exercise benefits this population and the fact that it can truly slow down the progression rate is amazing ! I have been working as a PT for 3 years now and I have gained so much knowledge from various professionals to bring the best care to my folks with PD. Unfortunately, my grandmothers doctors would only modify and/or change her medications and never suggested physical therapy as medicine. I truly believe with all my soul that she would have lived a few more years if she implemented regular exercise and PT into her life.
