Before retiring in September, I had conversations with many of you about what retirement would entail—all the free time to pursue long-delayed activities like vacations, volunteering, and so much more. There were endless possibilities ahead. I had so many ideas at that time. However, as often happens, life had other plans. Shortly before my retirement date, I received a Parkinson’s diagnosis. That one was not on my list of must-do’s.
Since my diagnosis I’ve dedicated myself to learning as much as I can about the disease. Unfortunately, there’s no cure, and there aren’t any approved medications to slow down the disease’s progression. Nevertheless, there are brilliant doctors and researchers working tirelessly to find a cure and improve the quality of life for Parkinson’s patients. I’m incredibly grateful for the exceptional care I receive from my amazing team at Mass General Brigham.
One critical thing I’ve learned is that exercise can significantly improve symptoms and overall quality of life for Parkinson’s patients. To this end, I’ve been participating in a wonderful Parkinson’s Exercise Program offered by the Hockomock Area YMCA and supported by the American Parkinson Disease Association. The program has not only improved my overall health but has also given me a way to contribute to a better disease outcome.
On May 17th, I’m participating in the Optimism Walk. Donations made to APDA support research and funding for exercise programs like the one I participate in. Please consider supporting APDA in our collective effort to find a cure.
