My Parkinson's story

When I walked out of the neurologist office thirteen years ago I was stunned. I was just diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. I was 43 with a wife and two 12-year-old kids. I had a book about Parkinsons in one hand and orders for blood tests and an MRI in the other. The rest of the day was a blur. Not only did I not know the answers to many questions, I didn’t even know what questions to ask. The Internet was still a dicey place for medical information and my neurologist appointments were few and far between.

That’s where APDA comes in.

APDA fills in the gaps between neurologist appointments. It provides support, reliable information, and community. I have had the privilege of being a member of the board of directors for the past eight years and have served as president for the past four years.

APDA supports a wide range of support groups, from the PRESS program for the newly diagnosed, to young-onset activity groups, to the Flying Solo group for those who live alone. The APDA website is a trusted source of information on symptoms, treatments, exercise, care partners, clinical trials, and practical ways to live better with Parkinson’s. APDA funds research, provides education, connects people to local resources, and helps families navigate a disease that can otherwise feel overwhelming and isolating.

I know firsthand how much that matters.

A Parkinson’s diagnosis can make you feel like the ground has shifted under your feet. APDA helps people find their footing again. It gives them a place to turn when they are scared, confused, newly diagnosed, or simply trying to figure out what comes next.

That is why I am asking for your support.

Your donation helps APDA Northwest provide programs, education, support groups, exercise resources, and reliable information to people with Parkinson’s and their families throughout our region. It helps make sure that the next person walking out of a neurologist’s office with a diagnosis does not have to figure it all out alone.

Please consider making a gift today. Every contribution helps APDA continue to provide hope, help, and community for people living with Parkinson’s disease.
