It is more than a walk
Riley was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma in February 2025. It is an extremely rare cancer for a child with Down Syndrome. We already knew he was EXTRA special, but this puts him in the medical journals. He went through six rounds of chemo treatments, staying in the hospital either three days or six days at a time for each round. Then came surgery in June 2025 to remove the tumor and have a total knee replacement implant installed. With only three weeks to recover from surgery, an additional eight rounds of chemo treatments resumed. He completed treatment and "rang the bell" in October 14, 2025.
Bone Biopsy & Port Placement
February 2025 it was confirmed as Ewing Sarcoma. Riley enjoyed meeting the Dogs On Call dogs that visited the hospital from time to time.
Hoops & Hugs in Clinic
March 2025 the basketball hoop is always a hit on our many trips to the Oncology Clinic. This is where we first met Katie from ASK. She always showed up with a smile and provided a much needed distraction for Riley while we discussed his treatment plan with the doctor.
Shaved Head
April 2025 his hair started falling out due to the chemo treatments, so we decided to shave it. He never lost that smile. Even after a scary fall (note the bandaged ankle). Thankfully, it happened to his good leg, not the cancer leg.
ASK Prom
May 2025 our entire family was invited to a Prom event during one of his stays in the hospital. It was our first event organized by ASK and it was absolutely amazing. Riley had a great time! We all did!
Tumor Removal & Knee Replacement implant
June 2025 the tumor was removed from the top of his tibia and an implant was installed to replace his knee joint. The cast had to be removed due to swelling, so he was fitted with a leg brace that had to be worn 24/7 for six months. Chemo resumed only three short weeks post surgery.
Special Visitors
July 2025 he was visited by the Chick-fil-A Cow. He loves Chick-fil-A!
ASK Kourageous Kid
August 2025 Riley was one of sixteen children to represent ASK's Kourageous Kid program. They provided a family photo session and presented him with a professionally framed picture from the campaign.
Nutsy Visited
Nutsy from the Flying Squirrels visited Riley while he was in-patient.
ASK Fall Festival
October 2025 getting hugs from Katie of ASK. It was an unseasonably HOT day, but it was fun! The highlight of the event was a caricature drawing from an artist who donated his time and talent for this event.
Ring That Bell !
October 14, 2025 Riley was able to ring the bell to signify he was done with chemo treatments!
