2026 Dempsey Challenge

This year, for personal reasons, I was not planning to take part in the Dempsey Challenge. Then a dear friend of mine, Lisa Haskell, was told that her cancer had returned after 20 years of being cancer free. I can't begin to imagine what she felt in that moment. This time, the cancer returned in both breasts and Lisa was faced with having a double mastectomy this summer and is scheduled for reconstructive surgery in September.

My heart sunk when Lisa shared the news with me. In Lisa's traditional fashion, she handled the diagnosis, the waiting, surgery, and her recovery with an unwavering faith and unshakable courage. Lisa fully trusted God to get her through this difficult journey. Her faith and strength are truly an inspiration to others.

There is so much a friend or family member wants to do when someone they care about receives this life-changing news. We do what we can but it never feels like enough. Lisa is not only a good friend of mine, she has been a big supporter of my efforts to raise money and awareness for the cause over the years. My heart was so heavy when Lisa told me of her diagnosis, I knew I had to do something more. I know I am not in the same running condition I have been in during past events, but participating in Lisa's honor is the least I can do to honor her, our friendship, her bravery, her incredible faith, and the courageous battle she continues to fight.

In honor of Lisa, and all those who benefit from the services the Dempsey Center provides, I have set a $1,000. goal. I hope you will join me spreading the message that she and others are not alone when facing this diagnosis. When we join together, we make a difference!
