Christina is 13. She has Down syndrome, a stubborn streak, an even bigger sense of humor, and absolutely no interest in giving up on anything, including the things that are genuinely hard for her.

People often show up with a picture in their head of what Down syndrome looks like, acts like, or means. Then they meet Christina, and that picture falls apart. She is navigating teenage life like every other 13-year-old, while also dealing with academic and health challenges most people never see. She keeps going anyway.

We have walked with DSAW-Greater La Crosse Area since Christina was a baby. Some years, we have used the funding directly. Early on, grants helped cover private OT that made a real difference in her movement and development. Other years, we have not needed much, but that just means the money was there for a new family instead.

That might mean a new parent packet of information along with support for a family learning their newborn baby’s diagnosis for the first time, sometimes with no warning at all. We knew ahead of time with Christina, giving us time to prepare before she was born. Not everyone gets that.
