Why I Walk

Join me in walking for a healthier start for moms and babies.

This year, I've joined the planning committee for the Boston Promise Walk for Preeclampsia, and I'm asking for your support as my team and I work toward our goal of $1,000.

What is preeclampsia? Preeclampsia is a serious blood pressure disorder that can develop during pregnancy, labor, or in the weeks after birth. It's marked by high blood pressure and signs of organ stress — often affecting the kidneys or liver — and can progress quickly and unpredictably. Left untreated, it can lead to seizures (eclampsia), stroke, organ failure, placental abruption, and preterm birth. It's one of the leading causes of maternal and infant illness and death worldwide, and it doesn't stop being a risk once the baby is born — postpartum preeclampsia can develop even in people who had normal blood pressure throughout pregnancy, sometimes days or weeks after delivery.

As a Labor & Delivery nurse, I see firsthand how preeclampsia can turn a joyful pregnancy into a frightening one overnight. It's one of the leading causes of maternal and infant illness and death worldwide, yet many people have never heard of it until it affects them or someone they love. The Preeclampsia Foundation funds critical research, supports families navigating a diagnosis, and pushes for earlier detection and better care — knowledge and care that I get to see the impact of every shift I work in the hospital.
