Our Story
Matthew’s Story: A Fighter, a Survivor, and an Inspiration
From the very beginning, Matthew has shown us that he is stronger than we could have ever imagined.
Matthew was born with Down syndrome and spent his first 17 days in the NICU. After coming home, he was a healthy and happy little boy. Other than the occasional cold, cough, or strep throat, Matthew grew up without major health problems. He learned to walk, say his first words, and communicate in his own way. He took his time with some things, but he never stopped making progress.
Matthew has always had a big personality and an even bigger heart. He loves to run, jump, dance, laugh, and have fun. He loves recording himself doing silly things, playing with his stuffed animals—which he considers his friends—and making everyone around him smile. Matthew loves life, and he has always found joy in the little things.
Then, in 2024, when Matthew was only nine years old, our lives changed completely. Matthew suffered a spinal stroke that caused him to lose control of his body. We rushed him to the hospital, where he spent about three weeks intubated and fighting to recover.
After leaving the hospital, Matthew went to rehabilitation, where he had to learn so many things all over again—how to walk, talk, eat, move, and regain his independence. He spent nearly six months going through an incredibly difficult recovery. He even came home with a tracheostomy, which was eventually removed about six months later.
His recovery amazed everyone around him. Doctors, therapists, and everyone who watched his progress were impressed by how hard he worked and how much he accomplished.
But Matthew wasn’t finished.
He kept moving forward.
He kept laughing.
He kept talking.
He kept dancing.
He kept being Matthew.
Just when we thought he had overcome one of the biggest challenges of his life, another one came.
This past summer, Matthew became sick with a virus that developed into pneumonia. His oxygen levels became dangerously low, and once again, we rushed him to the hospital. The doctors tried different treatments to help him breathe and recover, but his body needed time to rest and heal. They made the difficult decision to intubate him again.
This time, Matthew spent 19 days on a ventilator while heavily sedated so his body could heal.
And once again, when he woke up, he had to start over.
He had to relearn how to walk.
He had to regain his strength.
He had to learn to eat and move independently again.
He went back to rehabilitation, worked with therapists, and fought through another long and difficult recovery.
After weeks of hard work, Matthew finally came home just a couple of weeks ago.
Now we are beginning another chapter. We are working with his therapists and his school to help him get back on track. Matthew is walking, but slowly, and he currently uses a wheelchair when he needs extra support. We are continuing to work every day to help him regain his strength, endurance, independence, and confidence.
But if there is one thing we have learned from Matthew, it is this:
Matthew does not give up.
He has faced things that no child should ever have to face, and yet he continues to smile, laugh, dance, play, and try again.
Matthew reminds us that progress doesn’t always happen quickly. Sometimes progress is one step. Sometimes it is one word. Sometimes it is simply getting out of bed and trying again.
But every step matters.
Every smile matters.
Every little victory matters.
Matthew has shown us that being strong doesn’t mean never falling down. It means getting back up and trying again.
Helping Matthew and Other Children Like Him
This fundraiser is especially meaningful to our family because it supports the Down Syndrome Network of Montgomery County (DSNMC)—an organization that supports not only Matthew, but so many other children and families in our community.
We have experienced firsthand how important it is to have a community that understands, supports, and encourages families raising children with Down syndrome. From resources and programs to activities, education, advocacy, and opportunities for children to build confidence and independence, this support can make a real difference.
When you support this fundraiser, you are helping Matthew continue his journey, but you are also helping create opportunities for other children with Down syndrome to learn, grow, participate, and reach their own goals.
Our hope is that Matthew’s story can inspire others the same way he has inspired us.
We believe in Matthew. We believe in his future. And we believe in every child with Down syndrome who is working toward their next milestone.
Matthew has already shown us twice what a fighter he is.
Now, we can’t wait to see how far he can go—and how many other children we can help along the way.
Keep going, Matthew. One step at a time. We are all walking this journey with you. ❤️
