Our Story

If you've ever met Helen, you've probably been greeted with a big smile, a hug, or an enthusiastic "Hi!" She has a gift for making people feel like a friend.

Helen is 18 years old and entering her senior year of high school. She loves swimming, singing, cooking, reading, spending time with family and friends, and just about anything that brings people together. She works part-time helping young swimmers, has been a member of the Water's Landing Swim Team for many years, and is already looking ahead to the future. After graduation, Helen plans to attend college and is exploring careers working with children in either early childhood education or pediatric healthcare.

Like every family, our journey has included both celebrations and challenges. Through it all, we've learned that high expectations, meaningful opportunities, and genuine inclusion open doors—not just for individuals with Down syndrome and other intellectual and developmental disabilities, but for everyone. We've also learned that inclusion doesn't happen by accident. It grows when families, educators, employers, neighbors, and organizations see potential, create opportunities, and make room for everyone to belong.

This summer, Helen is participating in the Down Syndrome Network of Montgomery County's 321 Ready Summer Program, where she's exploring her interests for college and future careers while building the independence and life skills that will help her achieve those goals. Watching her discover new interests, take on new responsibilities, and prepare for what's next reminds us why programs like these matter.

Over the years, we've seen firsthand that inclusion enriches everyone's lives. When people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities learn, work, volunteer, play sports, and participate in their communities together, everyone benefits. Friendships grow, perspectives broaden, and communities become stronger. We've experienced that throughout Helen's life, and we're grateful for every teacher, coach, employer, teammate, friend, neighbor, family member, and advocate who has welcomed her, challenged her, and recognized all she has to offer.

That's why we're proud to support the Down Syndrome Network of Montgomery County. Through advocacy, education, and programs like 321 Ready, DSNMC helps individuals with Down syndrome pursue their goals, build independence, and participate fully in their communities.

Many of you reading this have been part of Helen's journey. Thank you for believing in her, celebrating her accomplishments, and encouraging her every step of the way. If you're able, we hope you'll consider supporting Team Helen. Your donation helps ensure that more individuals and families have access to the opportunities, resources, and connections that make a lasting difference.

Thank you for being part of Helen's story.
