Comeback Year

October 11th, 2019, I went out for a 1.5 hr training ride in preparation for the handicap Gran-Fondo. It was a pretty easy ride, but I completed it by riding of my 25% grade, 400 foot long driveway. As always it leaves me extremely breathless. I could have done better on my water intake that day too.

An hour later I had a massive stroke while picking my kindergartener up from school. At first, I just thought that I had overexerted myself on my bike ride and tried to recover. I kept thinking that if I could gain control of myself then we could leave to meet with my extended family in Gatlinburg TN. However, things did not get better, so we called 911. They rushed me to the hospital and ran some tests on me but could not find the reason why I was having these issues. They sent me home. I was not even able to walk because I had completely lost my balance.

I then continued to stroke throughout the night. My wife would periodically check on me to make sure I was still breathing.  The next morning when we woke up, I realized I could not drink water at all without choking. We called my primary doctor and he urged us to call 911 again.

So, for the second time 911 came and picked me up. This time the hospital was able to locate the stroke and they stated it was very large. I remained in the hospital for two weeks and then was transitioned over to the Rogers C Peace rehab hospital for another two weeks. I had to learn how to walk, swallow, talk louder, exercise my eyes to alleviate the double vision that I now had.  I had many more issues, to lengthy to define.

It has been a long recovery, but I consider this year to be my comeback year. I want to ride again for Wheels for Meals as I had done many times in the past. I enjoy helping this charity so much, now I hope that my story encourages you to help them too. Please join with me and supporting them as I aim to complete the 25 mile course.
