My name is Ana Stephenson. I'm 42 years old and am a wife and proud mother of 2 boys, ages 4 & 11. My journey of living with Epilepsy has been very difficult at times. Losing the ability to drive after seizures, countless EEGS, hospital stays, surgery, countless MRIs, concussions ,cognitive and memory impairments , ambulance rides, medications and side effects, but mostly the fear of never knowing when or where a seizure might happen. It can be a scary and out of control kind of feeling. Despite the many difficulties, there have been blessings, as well. I've learned humility, compassion, perseverance and gained incredible strength. I'm so very lucky to have the very best medical care, I feel, is available in AZ. I have a team of doctors who listen to and truly care about me. I was so worried that this diagnosis would prevent me from having children, but it hasn't.
I've done volunteer work with the Epilepsy Foundation of AZ, that has been very rewarding. These experiences have included being a peer mentor, the camp social worker at Camp Candlelight for kids with Epilepsy and helping to go into schools to train teachers and staff on what seizures are and how to provide emergency care. EFAZ is such a good organization and has done so much to further the understanding of and research for, Epilepsy. There is just so much to learn and so many amazing treatments coming due to new technologies.
Please join me in helping raise awareness and funds to support the Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona so more Arizonans can have hope for a future without epilepsy!
