What are funds raised from the event used for?
Each year in the U.S., nearly 21,000 babies are stillborn - affecting 1 in every 185 pregnancies, or about 55 families every day. Research shows that at least 25% of these deaths are preventable, meaning thousands of lives could be saved annually. The health of a mother and her baby are deeply interconnected: pregnancies ending in stillbirth carry more than four times the risk of severe maternal morbidity and a sevenfold higher risk of maternal mortality compared to those resulting in live births.
Healthy Birth Day, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preventing stillbirth through evidence-based programming, advocacy, and research. It created Count the Kicks, a proven initiative that empowers expectant parents to track fetal movement, which is one of the earliest indicators and sometimes the only sign of potential distress.
Count the Kicks provides simple tools and education to help parents understand their baby’s normal movement patterns. The free app, available in 24 languages, allows users to track how long it takes to feel 10 movements, monitor changes over time, and receive daily reminders. It has been downloaded more than 1,000,000 times by families in all 50 states and over 140 countries. Additional resources include a web-based kick counter and printable charts in 18 languages.
Through the Count the Kicks campaign, parents become more aware and confident in recognizing when something may be wrong, prompting timely communication with healthcare providers. This approach works. In its first 10 years in Iowa, the state’s stillbirth rate dropped by nearly 32%, while national rates remained largely unchanged. Replicating this success nationwide could save more than 6,000 babies each year. We also know it’s saving mothers’ lives - meaning one App has the potential to protect two lives at once.
Proceeds from Aces for Acel will directly support efforts to expand Count the Kicks education and resources in New Hampshire and beyond, reaching maternal health professionals, expectant parents, and community organizations. Learn more at www.countthekicks.org
