Why I am climbing....
Although I have known about ovarian cancer for a long time, it was not until my friend, Mary Beth Kepner, was diagnosed that I really understood the significant impact and toll of this cancer on women of all ages. Mary Beth and I met on Mt Marcy in the Adirondack Mts of New York when we were casually working to summit the high peaks in each state. On that day we discovered that we had many things in common including our love of hiking and we became fast friends. Just before my first trip to Alaska to visit Mary Beth and Floyd, I learned that she had a large mass which was subsequently diagnosed as ovarian cancer. Mary Beth's strength throughout her journey of diagnosis, surgery, treatment and her subsequent recovery was remarkable. We talked often as she worked towards her goal of reaching the summit of Denali. And alas, she was there!
During this time, I also learned of Jess Wedel and her journey with ovarian cancer. Jess was a guide on Mt Rainier with my daughter Lauren who spoke so highly of her courage, strength and experience. When Mary Beth asked if I was interested in going to Everest Base Camp as a supporter I was enticed. When I learned that Jess was going as a guide and met the other ovarian cancer survivors, family member, and supporters as well as Dr. Hope, I was hooked.
Since then, many of my friends have said they don't know the risk factors or symptoms of ovarian cancer. It is my hope that this effort will raise awareness as well as funds to support prevention strategies which may help my friends and so many others.
