The money we raise goes to the Northwest Chapter of the American Parkinson's Disease Association. It funds reasearch and supports people impacted by Parkinson’s disease through innovative services, programs, and education.
Here is how ADPA has helped me:
I was diagnosed with Parkinson's on Halloween in 2021. (Eerie!) Soon afterward, Steve and I enrolled in the association's free 8-week course for those newly diagnosed and their partners. During those in-person sessions, we learned so much from the leaders and from volunteer guest speakers, including one who became my neurologist at UW Medicine, Dr. Yi-Han Linn. I feel so grateful to have found her through APDA.
Also, we attended the course with four other local couples. Soon we were solid friends, and we continue to gather monthly to support one another. Again, I am grateful.
Twice a week I attend a free yoga class sponsored by APDA for people with Parkinsons. The class is wonderful! I met a fellow yogi through the class who connected me to an all-women support group, which is a nice complement to my coed support group.
Finally, APDA was there for me with a free counseling session when my health took an uncertain turn. The on-staff social worker listened to me, provided custom resources, and generally helped me through a rough patch.
