Just before Blaze's 5th birthday in September 2009 his pediatrician found a lump in his abdomen that he originally thought was backed up stool. After two months of medicine and x-rays the pediatrician sent us for a CT scan that revealed a mass. That November he had a biopsy that showed no cancer. He had major surgery that December that lasted 9 hours. They weren't able to get much because the tumor wrapped around a main artery and weaved in and out of his spine. That surgery left him unable to walk, unable to support any of his weight, and unable to go to the bathroom. We came home on Christmas with Blaze in a wheelchair and with a catheter. In January they told us the pieces of the tumor that were removed showed ganglioneuroblastoma. He went through chemo from January to April 2010. With PT he slowly started walking and gaining strength. We were sent to Philadelphia for MIBG therapy but we were told Blaze wasn't a good candidate. In June 2010 we took Blaze to Sloan Kettering in NY and Dr. LaQuaglia did surgery. He removed as much of the tumor as he could without paralyzing Blaze. We were told Blaze would never be cancer free or be in remission. However in 2013 during routine scans they found the tumor was still there but no cancer was within it. Last November Blaze was 5 years cancer free and officially in remission. ASK is an amazing childhood cancer foundation that does a lot for kids with cancer and their families.
