What is a Virtual 5K & Movement Challenge?

A Virtual 5K and Movement Challenge is a fitness challenge that you can participate in on your terms and your abilities! Choose from a variety of activities (see chart below) designed to get you moving and you can complete your goal at any location and at your own pace. You can run a traditional 5K at your favorite park or trail or ride a bike, climb the stairs in your home, complete rigorous house or yard work- it’s all up to you! Strive towards your distance goal (3.1 miles) and fundraising goals together!

When do I need to complete my activity?

The Hometown Hero Challenge will take place on Memorial Day weekend, May 23-25, 2020. We ask that you complete your fitness activity over the course of these three days. However, there is no time limit the steps must be covered in and you can split up your steps between multiple days and activities. The important thing is to finish the challenge and have fun!

How will I keep track of my activities and steps?

After registering for the Challenge, join our Facebook group to join in the group conversation! Post photos, progress updates, and motivational camaraderie. Because the focus of this event is to get you active and moving and raise awareness for BCI’s mission we will not be officially keeping track of everyone’s distance and completion times. However, if you would like to keep track of your routes and activity times and share them with others via the Facebook group we recommend registering for Strava and downloading app on your mobile device. This app uses GPS technology to track your activity route, distance traveled, and time took to complete the activity. You can then share your completed activity in the Facebook group!

What am I raising money for?

Become a Hometown Hero and be a part of BCI’s #InclusionRevolution by registering or supporting the Virtual 5K & Movement Challenge! All funds raised by this event will fund BCI’s employment programs for adults with disabilities. The Hometown Hero who raises the most money will win an awesome prize package that includes a Google Home Mini, a $20 gift card to Chick-fil-A, and limited edition BCI swag!

How can I fundraise after registering for the Virtual 5K?

The funds raised from registration fees will contribute to the event fundraising thermometer but we really need your help to ensure we reach our $10,000 goal! After registering for the event, you will receive a link to your personal fundraising page that can be customized with photos as well as your unique story behind your support for BCI.

We know that BCI has many supporters who want to help our employees during this COVID-19 crisis but are unsure how to contribute. This is where you come in!

When you share your personal fundraising page on social media, let your family and friends know how they can support your participation in the Hometown Hero Virtual 5K by establishing a fundraising goal or by detailing how your fitness activity correlates with the pledges or contributions you receive. For example, you could say that for every $20 pledged to your page you will walk, run, or bike an additional 0.25 mile. Or that everyone who contributes $10 to your fundraising page will get to choose one song to add to your fitness playlist that you will listen to while you complete your chosen activity on event weekend. The options are endless and can be as fun or as serious as you’d like!

What does BCI do?
