I’m thrilled to be participating in BENDIDGO 11.0, a fundraiser supporting Ben Carlson Foundation! The Ben Carlson Foundation was formed to honor the memory of Newport Beach Lifeguard Ben Carlson, who died on duty July 6th, 2014 while attempting to rescue a swimmer in distress. The Ben Did Go is a 30 mile paddle event from Avalon on Catalina to Newport Beach to honor Ben's memory and raise money for the foundation.

The foundation supports a variety of ocean based initiatives, including providing resources for underfunded lifeguarding agencies across the globe, junior lifeguard scholarships for underserved youth, and after school water safety classes for Newport Mesa students, among others. My first year guarding for San Clemente State was 2014, and I can remember the shockwaves Ben's death sent through the entire lifeguarding community. Having the opportunity to finally participate in the event that honors his memory is something I do not take lightly, and I'm honored to have the chance to contribute in even this small way to his continuing legacy.
